 | Tip of the Week: Rusty’s Corner—Vol. 3, No. 1 (Early May, 2008)
Do you understand how important it is for you to learn how to move through the water at swim practice?
You are well aware of how to move in air, but how about water? Water is 800 to 1000 times denser (thicker) than air. After you dive in the water, moving through the water is like swimming in a pool of Jello! When you start moving your arms, it’s like being in a storm at sea. So much resistance is pushing against you, that it is robbing you of your energy and pep.
Great swimmers know how to eliminate most of this resistance through BODY STREAMLINE. They save their energy and pep for FORWARD MOTION. The secret of swimming is not learning to swim better; it is learning how to move through the water “fish-like.” It is learning how to get “DPS,” not “SPS.”
What’s “DPS”? Come to practice and find out!
Something to think about: In a 25 yard pool, Michael Phelps travels underwater 16 yards (15 meters) swimming “fish-like” in a perfect streamlined position. When he comes up, he only has 9 yards to swim. How about you? Archived Tips of the Week May 4 June 9 May 27 July 2 June 25 June 11 June 4 | |
